Description

We want the footer on the main page to be bigger, better designed, and act as a sitemap with a lot of helpful links. We also want the footer on the conference pages to match the footer on the main page, but potentially have more/different information such as, the credit to the illustrator/artist for that year.

Why this is valuable:

  • Helps users navigate site.
  • Is a common pattern.

Acceptance Criteria

  • Footer has write speak code logo which links to main org page
  • Footer has proper contrast
  • Conference footer has links to previous conference years.

Dev approach

  • find more examples/ do design research
  • determine categories and links for footer
  • create footer component that can take in a list of links or other props?
  • store links as yaml / add to CMS

Hey @janedotbiz Left a bunch of design discovery/inspiration screenshots!
Do you have any updates on this ticket?

Here's a brainstorm of draft version of content -- obviously we don't have most of these pages yet, but maybe they can inform design.

Layout-wise I like the first example from Dropbox the best, then the 2nd from Jumpstart, but with the WSC Styling, obviously.

For content, I was thinking, based on what's currently available, and the last acceptance criteria of linking to all the past Conference sites.

@deweydell What are your thoughts on the social links? Are they fine as is (along the bottom), or would you rather see them added as a column (I think there is space for either), like:

Stay in touch

  • Email
  • GitHub
  • Instagram
  • Linkedin
  • Meetup
  • Patreon
  • Twitter

Awesome, thanks for this.

  1. Chapters - for now these can link directly to the meetup pages.
  2. Community - looks great
  3. Conference - if we only render this list on the conference sites, will there be a link to the next conference in the footer on the main site? I really like adding the city here.
  4. Sponsorship - I don't think this needs to be it's own section. Or if so, I don't think it makes sense to link out to each sponsorship level. To keep it simpler what about:
    • Current sponsors (changes each year, but always links to the sponsorship section on the homepage, which might eventually be a separate page).
    • Sponsor us (link to prospectus)
  5. Stay in touch - I love your idea for social links, if you think it would look nice using words instead of icons I'm all for it since it's more accessible.

If trying to accommodate the conference site needs into the main footer component is hindering your work, feel free to de-prioritize it. We can always tackle it once the 2020 site work begins.
